Piton Savanne

This hike provides open and stunning views of the the southern coast and Black River Gorges National Park from a prominent summit. The expansive views are quite unique compared to many other trails in the area, but there is also minimal shade. The trail is easy to follow and of good quality apart from the final few minutes near  the summit. The elevation gain is not significant. The trailhead is the same for Montagne Cocotte.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Trailhead off Chemin Grenier Road
  • End Point: Summit
  • Length: 3.8 miles round trip
  • Duration: 1.5-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 1987ft
  • Highest point: 2331ft
  • Total elevation gain: 733ft

Coming from Chemin Grenier you will climb until you enter the park and reach a signbank/map of the park – the trailhead is on the east side of the road here. The trail begins at the gate, which you can pass to the right of if it is closed. It serves to keep vehicles/poachers out of the Pink Pigeon habitat which you will pass through. You will follow this dirt road/trail for much of the hike. You will pass several buildings and then reach a cell phone tower. Beyond here the trail begins to narrow, but just keep to the most clear trail that heads towards the conical peak in the direction of the sea. There are a few minor diversions, but if you keep the peak in your sights you cannot take a wrong turn. The summit trail diverges to your left as you near the summit. It is slightly overgrown, but short. On the summit, climb to the top of the crumbling marker for better views. Return along the same route, but keep the cell phone tower in your sights.
