This is a relatively short hike to a not very prominent peak on the southern end of Black River Gorges National Park. You will be rewarded with good views of the south coast if you are willing to fight your way to the summit along an overgrown, unmaintained trail. It can be done in conjunction with Piton Savanne as parking for the trails is at the same location. Piton Savanne is the far superior of the two hikes.
Route:
- Type of trail: Out and Back
- Start point: Trailhead off Chemin Grenier access road
- End Point: Summit
- Length: 2.2 miles round trip
- Duration: 1 hour
- Lowest point: 2285ft
- Highest point: 2568ft
- Total elevation gain: 620ft
The trailhead on the east side of the road as you enter the park on the Chemin Grenier Road (see photos), just after a signbank/map of the park. This is the trailhead for Piton Du Savanne as well. Head North along the Chemin Grenier Road further into the park. After a few hundred meters, just before a right hand turn, you will come across a small gravel pullout on the left. Turn left onto this trail. Cross a stream and then begin climbing. The trail has a few junctions, but it is not hard to follow if you aim for the summit. You will pass through one junction – head straight. At the second junction – turn right. Continue to the summit.
If you coninue straight or northwest, you will get great views of Alexandra Falls, but I would not continue any further. Information on the park shows that this trail that continues to the falls, it is incredibly overgrown and very difficult to follow.
Return along the same route, or take the trail that goes due north. The northern trail will bring you to a road. Turning right here will bring you back to the Chemin Grenier Road where you will once again want to take a right to return to the trailhead.
