One of the largest islets in Mauritius with over three miles of solitude on trails meandering through forests, lakes, ruins and to the sea. The island has no permanent resident, but gets a few visitors each day. The trails on the island are part of a government-built “Nature Walk’ that is well-maintained and easy to follow. There is a very nice picnic area pavillion on the island as well.
There are ruins of former habitation in the center of the island along the main trail. Scattered about the island are depressions filled with seepage from the sea, although one has quite a bit of depth and is teeming with fish. The trails are not marked, but the island is small, so wander far and wide. You will find some priceless peace and quiet here.
Getting there
- Kayaking in the mangroves and hiking on the island with Yemaya Adventures.
- Catching a boat from Grand Gaube or hitching a ride with a fisherman at Bain de Rosnay. The last option is technically not allowed, but…
- Snorkeling or swimming your way across the 300-400m from Bain du Rosnay. I have done this and it is not very difficult if you are a good swimmer, but be mindful of the tide/currents. I floated all of my gear behind me in a dry bag attached with a rope.
