Dharuty MTB Trail

A permanent marked mountain biking trail running from Dharuty Forest- Grand Gaube- Kalodyne- Petit Raffray – Dharuty Forest with another short section on the south side of the B12 in Dharuty Forest. The trail varies from forest, to sugar cane fields, to rocky single track, to residential areas, to dirt roads, to pavement, and through open, grassy fields. It is a surprisingly open and enjoyable route that nobody should find too physically challenging.

Navigation can be a challenge though. The trail is marked, but in places you might have to take a moment to find the marker on a rock, a tree, or a telephone pole. There are quite a few turns and intersections, so you will have to pay attention your first time around.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Loop
  • Start/end point: B12 – Dharuty Forest
  • Length: 11.9miles round trip
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 46ft
  • Highest point: 324ft
  • Total elevation gain: 643ft

The northern portion of the trail seems to work best if it is done in a counter-clockwise fashion, as the spray painted markings are most visible from this direction. A complete written description of the trail seems futile. Look carefully at each intersection as each one is marked in some fashion, even if you are merely continuing straight. This includes where the trail crosses paved roads. There are a few narrow single track sections near Calodyne and two places where you must ride or walk across a narrow rock bridge to get across tidal flats.

If you feel uncertain about finding your way check out the Facebook group Permanent Mountain Biking Trails in Mauritius to find a friend to ride with you or ask questions.

There is nobody definitely in charge of this trail. There are many good people in the Facebook group that have been maintaining this trail and others around Mauritius. If there is a missing marker or a downed tree – try to fix it yourself or let the group know.

I apologize, but I didn’t even know that it had all been connected. I will try and get info, but I would send a message to Patrick at Yemaya Adventures. He knows the most about mountain biking on the island.

      Take care,

      Alex
