Mare Longue Loop

This long trail takes you along ridges with views of the gorges and around the banks of Mare Longue reservoir. It mostly follows a well marked dirt road shaded by trees, but there are a few kilometers of foottrail around the reservoir. It is long, but has minimal elevation change, making it only moderately challenging.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Loop
  • Start/end point: Petrin
  • Length: 4 miles round trip
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Lowest point: 1923ft
  • Highest point: 2216ft
  • Total elevation gain: 771ft

The hike begins at the Petrin entrance to the park. There are signs placed at all of the major junctions. Follow the signs for Mare Longue. It is possible go around the reservoir in either direction. Both ways the trail follows a dirt road, but then a trail diverges to get around the north side of the reservoir. Coming from either direction just keep your clockwise/counterclockwise direction in mind when you reach any major junctions. You will cross the head of a dam at one point. On the east side there are a few stream crossings where you may have to get your feet wet and a great section of dwarf forest. You will eventually reach the road you arrived on, return the same way.
