The Parakeet Trail is one of the most frequented trails in the park and runs between the Riviere Noire entrance to Black River Gorges and Plaine Champagne near the Black River Gorges Viewpoint. It is a relatively sustained and steep climb/descent, but the elevation change tends to come in nicely spaced stages – a moderately difficult hike. There are signs at all major points and the trail is very well worn. There trail is mostly shaded/under canopy making views few and far between. The trail starts at Black River Gorges Riviere Noire or along the main road that cuts through Plaine Champagne.

To ascend the route begins at the Black River Gorges Riviere Noire trailhead. Proceed on the main track entering the park until you reach a signbank and a small pavilion. You will turn right here onto the trail marked Parakeet Trail. This track will weave up a ridge and down the other side to the river where you must cross – be careful here as the rocks are slippery. If the river is running full getting your feet wet might be unavoidable. After you cross follow the track until there is a junction – follow the signs and turn left for the Parakeet Trail. You will follow this well-worn track with ease until you reach the Plaine Champagne road.
From Plaine Champagne: On the road you will see the marker/entrance shown in the gallery. Enter and park your car here. You find the trail at the end of the track and begin descending. Continue on this main trail until you reach a junction and turn right towards Black River. Cross the river – be careful here as the rocks are slippery. . If the river is running full getting your feet wet might be unavoidable. You will then weave up a ridge and down the other side. You will come across a small pavilion and signbank. If you turn left here it will take you to the Riviere Noire entrance.
