Guiby Peak

This route will take you to the shoulder of Guiby Peak. You will have to do some route finding as there is no clear trail for much of the way, although your destination remains clear along the way. The view from the shoulder is great, but requires some dedication and unfortunately the route to the summit looks inadvisable without climbing gear. The route is shaded half of the way.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Trail off Le Pouce Road
  • End Point: Shoulder – Not the summit
  • Length: 2.0 miles round trip
  • Duration: 5-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 1273ft
  • Highest point: 2058ft
  • Total elevation gain: 921ft

The first part of the route is on a dirt road that diverges from the road to Le Pouce. There is not much in the way of good parking along this road, so it is advisable to park elsewhere, like the Le Pouce Trailhead. Keep your destination in mind for this entire hike: the saddle between the two pinnacles on the north side and the peak itself. Follow the dirt road as it veers in this direction. It continues to fade in quality.

The road will end near a sheetmetal shack (see photos). Continue past the shack until you reach the field. Turn to the left/south here and skirt along the field until you reach the woods. Enter the woods. There is no clear path for this first part. Your aim is to find a rocky slab/gully which you will follow nearly to the saddle. You will continue heading straight in the forest, slightly climbing until you reach this gully. Begin following it upwards. It will fork in several places, become steep, become slick – just find the easiest way to continue upward with the saddle as your goal.

Near the top you will reach a cliff band where you will either have to go right or left. Go to the right and work your way around it. A steep trail will appear here. Use the Chinese Guava to climb your way up to the saddle. From the saddle you can go over towards the two pinnacles or continue further up the shoulder as far as you are comfortable.

I tried a few different routes towards the summit here and I did not feel comfortable on any of them without climbing gear. You may have a different level of comfort. Let me know if you find a route that works.

Return along the same route.
